Product demo videos
How to make a product demo video on Mac.
A good product demo shows one flow, clearly, at the right pace. This is how to make one with Meye, a native Mac screen recorder and editor: record the flow, let the zooms follow your clicks, add captions from your script, score the cut and export it for wherever it goes.
From first take to finished film.
Every step is a control in the editor. The commands show the same step from the meye command line.
Record the flow
Pick a window, an area or the whole screen, or an iPhone over USB. Turn on the mic, system audio, camera or keyboard if you need them. Rehearse once, then record the flow in one go; pauses get trimmed in the next step.
$ meye record start --window <id> --mic --keys --waitZoom and tidy
Auto Zoom on Clicks plans zooms from where you clicked. Skip Idle speeds up the waits. Trim what you do not need and smooth the cursor if it wanders.
$ meye skip-idle --onAdd captions
Type captions, import an SRT or VTT file, or record a voice-over and let Meye align your script to it, word by word.
$ meye narration import voice.m4a --script @script.txt --waitScore the cut
Add music in a mood. Meye writes a four-part score whose tempo puts your transitions on bar lines, and lowers it under your voice.
$ meye music add --mood bright --seed 42Export
MP4 for sites and socials, GIF or WebP for docs and READMEs, ProRes 4444 or HEVC with alpha for another editor. Original size, 1080p, 720p or your own.
$ meye export --format mp4 --size 1080p --wait
Several captures, one film.
Most demos are a few short takes, not one long one. Keep them in one draft.
Record into a draft
Each new recording can go into the draft you are working on, from a different window or area if you like. Recordings play one after another as sections.
meye record start --area <x,y,w,h> --into latest --waitTransitions
Cut straight, or set a transition between sections from 0.1 to 2 s with motion blur. Save the ones you like as your own presets. Transitions are in the editor’s Advanced Mode.
meye section transition 2 --duration 0.6 --motion-blurBring in other media
Add pictures, movies and sound files you already have, such as a logo, an end card or a voice-over.
meye media import logo.pngCaptions from your script.
Meye does not transcribe speech. You bring the words; Meye times them.
Typed or imported
Add a caption at a time, or import an SRT or VTT file. An import with overlapping lines is refused as a whole, so nothing half-lands.
meye captions import captions.srtAligned to a voice-over
Import a recorded voice-over with its script. Meye listens on your Mac and makes word-timed captions, one per line of the script. The recording never leaves the Mac.
meye narration import voice.m4a --script @script.txtA placeholder voice
Before the real voice-over exists, the Mac’s system voice can read the script so you can time the cut to it.
meye narration placeholder --script @script.txtOne draft, every place it goes.
Check each platform’s current requirements before you upload; these are the shapes Meye can make.
| Where | What to export | Command |
|---|---|---|
| Website or landing page | MP4 at 1080p, 60 or 30 fps | meye export --format mp4 --size 1080p |
| Docs, READMEs, issues | GIF (up to 1080 on the short side) or WebP; no sound | meye export --format gif --fps 15 |
| Vertical video | A 9:16 frame, then MP4 | meye frame --ratio 9:16 |
| Square or 4:5 posts | A 1:1 or 4:5 frame | meye frame --ratio 4:5 |
| Another video editor | ProRes 4444 or HEVC with a transparent background | meye export --format prores4444 --transparent |
| Just one part | Any range of the finished film, at full quality | meye export --range 12.5,20 |
Let an agent cut the first draft.
If you use Claude Code or Codex, ask for the first cut in plain words. Each step the agent takes lands in your editor as one undo step, so you review it and keep what works.
Record the onboarding window for 30 seconds while I sign up. Skip the idle parts, zoom on my clicks, add my script as captions, score it bright and export a 1080p MP4.
Worth knowing.
Plain answers to what Meye is not.
- Meye does not transcribe speech or generate captions on its own. Captions are typed, imported, or aligned to a script you provide.
- Meye does not host videos or make share links. You export a file and put it where it belongs.
- There is no AI voice generation; the placeholder voice is the Mac’s system voice, for timing.
- Meye needs macOS 26 or later on Apple silicon. On Free, the first 5 captures each day export with a small mark.
Questions
As long as the one flow it shows, and no longer. Skip Idle and trimming help: waits of 2 s or more speed up to 4× or 8×, so the film keeps moving without you cutting every pause by hand.
Yes. Record into the same draft and each recording plays as its own section, one after another. Join them with a straight cut or a transition from 0.1 to 2 s.
No. Meye has no speech-to-text. You can type captions, import SRT or VTT, or import a voice-over with its script, and Meye times each word of the script to the voice on your Mac.
Yes. Music Meye generates for your drafts is yours to use, including commercially, royalty-free and without attribution. See the music section of the terms.
MP4, GIF, WebP, APNG, Live Photo, ProRes 4444, HEVC with alpha and PNG sequences, at the original size, 1080p, 720p or a size you choose. Change the frame to 9:16, 1:1, 4:5 or any size first.
Recording and editing have no limits on Free. The first 5 captures each day export with a small mark. Pro removes the mark and the daily limit and adds editing by AI agent. The trial lasts 7 days and needs no card.
